Make no mistake about it; America entertains the world. In the
case of The Big Bang Theory of course, the colorful, but eternally nerdy ensemble cast wouldn't quite be complete without
Raj, the lovable "foreigner." But then, that's kind of what the show is all about, isn't it?
All of the principal cast members pretty much fit the description of the classic "stranger in a strange land."
enough though, it is the camaraderie generated by the interaction of these assorted misfit characters that really drives the
show. So, in pseudo-scientific terms, it's good old fashioned basic chemistry that gets the whole world to tune
in each and every week, if not to see what wild and wacky adventures will unfold, then to witness just how the various relationships
depicted will continue to develop.
As the documentary below so aptly indicates; so far so good. So here's
to an increasingly bright future for The Big Bang Theory, one of the best TV shows (sitcom or otherwise)
to grace the global airwaves in quite literally generations.
5 Action Figures Just Begging to Made!
February 21, 2012, by Will Hoover
Just in case nobody has yet had the BRILLIANT IDEA to design and produce action figures based on
the five leading characters of the amazingly entertaining and ever exponentially growing more popular CBS TV sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, I for one, am here to strongly suggest just as much... RIGHT HERE AND RIGHT NOW!!!
The only problem is, the guys who could have made all this happen in a jiff went out of business way back
in 1983. Yes folks, I'm talking about the legendary MEGO Corporation! Back in the 1970s, the marketing savvy pop cultural wizards of the now defunct toy company
were busy buying up the lucrative licensing rights to hit TV shows such as Happy Days, Sonny & Cher, Star Trek and The Dukes of Hazzard.
#1 - Sheldon Cooper, Ph.D., Sc.D. (Jim Parsons), is an action figure in his own right
#2 - Leonard Hofstadter, Ph.D (Johnny Galecki) - Gotta have a Leonard to go with your Sheldon!
With their standard, highly articulated 1:9
and 1:6 scale basic figure bodies and highly talented team of 70s era sculptors, MEGO was perfectly positioned to provide a
collectibles hungry marketplace with miniature toy likenesses of all the hottest entertainment properties of the day.
#3 - Penny (Kaley Cuoco) - Though with a better female figure body than the one MEGO usually used!
Although MEGO has long since gone the way of the
Dodo, the many wonderful toys, action figures and dolls that were released during the company's heyday have since
inspired quite a number of now fully grown adults, who treasured their products as children, to start their own
"Mego-esque" business ventures.
In the past decade alone, from MEGO's time
honored legacy, has come CTVT, EMCE Toys and Bif Bang Pow!, among others. Surely, one of these fine companies really ought to be interested (if they aren't already)
in producing Big Bang action figures.
Unfortunately, to date, only Funko has released bobblehead figurines of leading Big Bang Theory characters such as Dr. Sheldon Cooper and Howard Wolowitz. But who wants a toy with an oversized head that just stands there and... bobbles?
Apparently, some people really do collect bobblehead
figures, since there does seem to be a growing market for these products. And though Sheldon Cooper does have a
pretty big head (pun intended) already, I must respectfully protest. I mean, for Sagan's sake, people!
In the end, the world MUST HAVE a fully articulated Sheldon Cooper action figure, with a noggin sculpted
to the proper scale. Anything less would surely be a crime against humanity!
Think about it! What our otherwise droll, dreary
and humorless world needs now is licensed Big Bang Theory character toys that can actually interact with classic
MEGO Star Trek and Planet of the Apes action figures! Now wouldn't THAT be something? Just imagine the possibilities! With the
newer EMCE Toys 8" Star Trek figures on hand, it would be a cinch to switch out the heads of Starship Enterprise crew members with all your favorite Big Bang characters!
#4 - Howard Wolowitz, M.Eng. (Simon Helberg), can hit on ALL the action babes on the toy shelf!
#5 - Rajesh Koothrappali, Ph.D. (Kunal Nayyar), doesn't even need dialogue. He's COOL!
As the amazing photo manipulations by Rabittooth.com below illustrate, Sheldon would of course be the science officer, in much the same vein as the ever
logical Mr. Spock. Leonard would then naturally be the perfect choice to be the intrepid gold shirt wearing senior
officer who almost always gets the girl. And isn't that Captain Kirk in a 23rd century nutshell?
Howard could be the ship's stalwart physician
(like Dr. McCoy) and poor Raj, who always seems to get left out (due in part to his selective mutism), could wear a red shirt. But wait! Since Raj actually holds a doctorate degree, he would certainly
have to be the ship's chief medical officer.
And Howard... well, I guess he'd have to be
the one to wear a red shirt. Yet... since Wolowitz is an engineer who works for NASA (and isn't nearly as expendable as the standard Star Trek security guard) he could definitely fill
in for the Mr. Scott character from the original series.
And Penny.... Who doesn't want to see that
little sweetie in an original series miniskirt? Proud nerds everywhere rejoice at the very thought! THINK, PEOPLE!
And get your geek on! Time's a wast'n for the production of potentially super cool custom action figures. And that's
just it, folks! When it comes to custom building characters from The Big Bang Theory, the sky is definitely
You KNOW what Leonard's thinking - "Penny, wear that Starfleet miniskirt, PLEASE!"
